27.04.2026 SWISS Newsbrief #3: Rejected Takeoff Delhi

On 26 April, shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time in India, an issue occurred with one of the engines during takeoff of flight LX147 in Delhi. The crew aborted takeoff and, following an assessment of the situation, made the precautionary decision to evacuate the aircraft. The aircraft involved is an Airbus A330 with registration HB-JHK. There were 228 passengers, 4 infants and 13 crew members on board.

We deeply regret the inconvenience caused. Together with our colleagues from the Lufthansa Group, we provided support to passengers on site and worked intensively to arrange alternative travel options. Individual onward travel solutions have been found for all guests, and we remain in contact with them.

Oliver Buchhofer, Chief Operations Officer of SWISS, said: “An evacuation is always an exceptional situation — for our passengers as much as for our crews. What matters most is this: when in doubt, we act decisively in the interest of safety. Our crews are extensively trained for exactly these situations. This also means giving very clear and loud commands in such moments. That may seem unusual, because passengers usually experience our crews very differently: calm and welcoming. In an evacuation, however, this tone is essential so that everyone can react quickly and safely. At the same time, we see that there is still a need for greater awareness, particularly when it comes to hand baggage. For a fast and safe evacuation, it is crucial that personal belongings are left behind. We are now reviewing how we can further strengthen communication on this topic. We are aware that images of such situations can trigger emotions, including among people who were not directly affected. All the more important, therefore, is to put what can be seen into context: standardised procedures, trained responses and a clear focus on the safety of everyone on board.”

Three passengers discharged from hospital, crew arrives in Zurich

Three passengers have since been discharged from hospital, while one passenger remains under medical care. The Zurich-based crew members arrived in Zurich this morning. The three Delhi-based cabin crew members are well and have remained in Delhi. All of them will continue to receive support from supervisors and specialists as needed.

We are currently awaiting clearance of the aircraft by the Indian authorities. Once approval has been granted, a SWISS technical team will carry out a detailed inspection of the engine and assess whether an engine replacement is required. It is currently unclear when the Airbus A330 will be able to return to Zurich. Our flight operations are currently not affected by this incident, and no flights have been cancelled as a result.

We understand that such an incident causes inconvenience, disrupts travel plans and may also create uncertainty. Our teams are doing everything possible to support our passengers and assist them in the best possible way. The safety and well-being of our guests and crew remain our highest priority at all times.

26.04.2026 SWISS Newsbrief #2: Rejected Takeoff Delhi

Shortly after 1 a.m. local time on April 26, an issue occurred with one of the engines during the takeoff of flight LX147 in Delhi. The crew aborted the takeoff and, after assessing the situation, decided as a precaution to evacuate the aircraft. The aircraft involved is an Airbus A330 with registration HB-JHK. SWISS has established a task force. There were 228 passengers, 4 infants, and 13 crew members on board.

All passengers were assisted and accompanied by our teams on site. We have accommodated them in hotels and rebooked them onto alternative flights. We were able to find an individual solution for all guests to continue their journey and remain in contact with them. We are aware that such an incident causes inconvenience, disrupts travel plans, and can also be unsettling. We deeply regret this. Our teams are doing everything they can to be there for our passengers and support them as best as possible.

4 passengers in the hospital, one crew member with a minor foot injury

Four passengers remain in the hospital. Our staff are also on site there and are closely supporting them – for as long as the situation requires. A Cabin Crew Member sustained a sprained ankle. The other crew members are unharmed.

((In an initial report, we had mentioned six injured passengers. However, two of these were uninjured accompanying persons. We regret this inaccuracy and have corrected the figure accordingly. In such a situation, which can be initially unclear, discrepancies can occur as we focus on managing the situation on the ground and providing the best possible support to our passengers.))

We are determined to fully understand what led to this incident. This includes, in particular, determining what led to the engine problem.

We deeply regret the inconvenience caused. We are aware that such an event can be stressful and traumatic for those affected. Our teams remain in close contact with our passengers and continue to support them even beyond the immediate situation. The safety of our guests and our crew is always our top priority.
